{"id":1805,"date":"2019-01-31T15:45:36","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T15:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stillpointcounselingandwellness.com\/2020\/02\/19\/mindfulness-and-meditation\/"},"modified":"2019-01-31T15:45:36","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T15:45:36","slug":"mindfulness-and-meditation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stillpointcounselingandwellness.com\/?p=1805","title":{"rendered":"Mindfulness and Meditation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"galleryImageBorder wsite-image alignleft\" style=\"border-width: 0; max-width: 100%; margin: 10px 10px 10px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stillpointcounselingandwellness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/mindfulness-ideogram_orig.jpeg\" alt=\"Picture\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a growing body of research for the practice of mindfulness and the use of meditation to enhance overall well-being and health.\u00a0 You have probably heard of mindfulness, but how much do we really understand or practice this day to day?<\/p>\n<p>Mindfulness is the action of paying attention to what is happening in the present moment without overly reacting, analyzing, or judging.\u00a0 Most of our distress lives in this &#8220;past or future thinking&#8221;.\u00a0 When we slow down enough to recognize the present moment, there is a calming effect.\u00a0 We can recognize in the present moment that we are safe; that we are enough; and, that we have time to make the next right action.<\/p>\n<p>John Kabot-Zinn is an author and leading educator on mindfulness in American mainstream.\u00a0 He developed the program Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and lectures on mindfulness around the country. \u00a0In a recent lecture I watched, Kabot-Zinn showed the calligraphy for the word mindfulness (shown here on the blog).\u00a0 He points out the character is composed of two ideograms.\u00a0 The top symbol means \u201cpresence\u201d and the bottom symbol means \u201cheart\u201d.\u00a0 So, he points out that a true understanding of mindfulness is that it is \u201cpresence of heart\u201d.\u00a0 I love this definition!\u00a0 We are practicing mindfulness to have a presence of our heart.\u00a0 When we are mindful, we are able to distance ourselves from the running narrative in our head of past and future worries.\u00a0 When we are mindful, we are able to detach from judgements or attachment to outcomes.\u00a0 When we are mindful, we are aligned with the energy of the heart.<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways to practice mindfulness including mindful eating, mindful walking \u2013 basically doing any daily task with a \u201cpresence of heart\u201d and an intention to connect the present moment.\u00a0 Meditation is the formal practice of just paying attention in a systematic way, which can increase our ability to maintain mindfulness in everyday life.\u00a0 Meditation can as simple as sitting still for a couple minutes and focusing on the sensation of your breath.<\/p>\n<p>An easy way to get comfortable and acquainted with meditation is through the use of apps.\u00a0 Below I have included a list by age of some of my favorite meditation apps and programs.\u00a0 There are many other options out there, so you can also do some exploring for yourself.\u00a0 You are never too young or old to get started with meditation.\u00a0 So, grab your phone, tablet, or computer and try one of these out today!<\/p>\n<p>\u200bYoung Children:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ninja Dream Training:\u00a0 A guided bedtime meditation for kids<\/li>\n<li>Smiling Mind<\/li>\n<li>Stop.
