Hi, I’m Katelyn Currie, MSW, LCSW.
I’m a licensed clinical social worker who helps children return to the business of simply being kids! Whether it’s building on a child’s intrinsic resiliency to overcome adversity or developing family specific skills to address behavioral concerns, my goal is to assist families and children in reconnecting with the joys and wonders of both childhood and child rearing!
Take a moment to imagine your child sitting down to talk for an hour? Sound unreasonable? Most likely because it is! Play is the universal language for children of all ages, and it is at the forefront of my sessions by encompassing movement, creativity, imagination, and fun! Make no mistake, talking still happens, but is usually wrapped up in a fun therapy activity!
Another major factor in helping children meet treatment goals is involvement and support from a loving caregiver. Hey! That’s you! Welcome to the team! Together we will help you and your child develop healthy boundaries, build your communication skills, and strengthen your relationship with one another!
If I hadn’t become a therapist, you would have definitely found me inside of a kindergarten classroom! A lover of all things silly and with an ability to lean into the cringe and awkward like no other, helping children and teens find the humor and fun in otherwise difficult, hard, or boring (their words!) conversations is a badge I wear proudly!
Growing up, I watched my mom nurture curiosity and joy in her preschool classroom, and I knew I had to do something similar! Becoming a child therapist allowed me an opportunity to take this to a deeper level, and gave me the ability to educate caregivers on how to hone these skills within themselves to strengthen and reinforce their relationship with their child. Watching families deepen their connection and communication with one another is one of my favorite things about my job, along with being able to show off my Uno playing skills, of course!
Katelyn has seen both the east and west sides of North Carolina, receiving her Master’s in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2020, and her Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology in 2018 at Appalachian State University. During her Master’s program, Katelyn interned with the local Carousel Child Advocacy Center, which solidified her love of working with children and their families, and helping them to process through trauma and build on their intrinsic resiliency. Katelyn is trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, with advanced trainings in LGBTQ+ youth, traumatic grief, and problematic sexualized behaviors. Katelyn enjoy’s working with children individually, with the caregiver's regular engagement in sessions. Katelyn is currently working on training her dog, Tallulah, as a possible therapy dog candidate.
