Hi, I’m Melissa Carr Powell MSW, LCSW.
I’m a licensed clinical social worker who uses various therapeutic techniques that focus on your natural strengths and needs. It is my hope that we can work together to shift your mindset and behaviors in a way that helps you to make progress towards your goals.
My approach is creative and collaborative. Using a person-centered, solution-focused approach to therapy it is my hope to emphasize client's strengths and autonomy, prioritizing their unique needs and personal goals. I achieve this through collaboration with the client to identify solutions, focusing on what is working and fostering empowerment. My approach encourages self-discovery and resilience, guiding clients to tap into their existing resources and capacities to overcome challenges. As a therapist I am supportive and non-judgmental allowing clients to feel heard and validated as they work toward meaningful change.
As a Wilmington native, I’m not the biggest fan of the beach, but my love for my hometown runs deep. After some time away, I decided to return to be closer to my family and to contribute to the community that shaped me. While I don’t spend much time on the shore, I find joy in cooking, curling up with a good book, and indulging in reality TV. Being back in Wilmington gives me the chance to reconnect with the people I care about and serve the town in meaningful ways.
My desire to be of service to others is what led me to become a therapist. I’ve always been drawn to helping people navigate life’s challenges, and I believe in the power of human connection to foster healing and growth. Becoming a therapist allows me to create a safe, compassionate space where individuals can explore their emotions, feel understood, and find their own path forward. I was inspired by the idea of empowering people to overcome difficulties and thrive.
Melissa received her Bachelor and Master of Social Work from The University of North Carolina- Pembroke. While in college she served the Robeson County community, working with families and children involved with the child welfare system. She is a Wilmington native and returned home after finishing graduate school. She has served the Wilmington community for almost a decade, working in various roles. She spent recent years leading a treatment team of counselors while providing direct therapy services to children and families in an Intensive In-Home setting. Melissa’s true passion is to make a difference in the community that she grew up in. Melissa enjoys spending her free time with her family. She also enjoys cooking and curling up with a good book.
