Surviving to Thriving: Support for Chronic Pain

by Brionna Alston, MSW Intern

Chronic pain: a term that may seem self-explanatory, but what exactly is it?

The truth is, it’s not a one-size-fits all experience. While everyone experiences occasional aches and pains, an estimated 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience persistent pain that lasts at least 3 months. It may feel sharp or dull, steady or intermittent, and can occur in nearly any part of the body. Typically, pain is a normal sensation that alerts our brains of an injury. With chronic pain, the body continues to send these signals.

There are many possible causes for long-term pain, including:

  • Injury, such as involvement in a car accident
  • Underlying disorders or diseases, like fibromyalgia or arthritis.
  • Previous surgery

Though chronic pain often cannot be eliminated, it can be managed! And the right treatment plan can help individuals improve their quality of life and increase function. In conjunction with traditional pain management, self-management can be a key component to your chronic pain journey. At Stillpoint, our therapists have a holistic approach to mental health, which means
that we believe that the mind and body are inter-connected, and both need to be looked after to be the best version of ourselves. With this in mind, Stillpoint is excited to announce a new program to assist with the self-management component of your journey – for free!

Facilitated by chronic pain advocate and MSW intern Brionna Alston, members of Surviving to Thriving: a Chronic Pain Group, will embark on a holistic, therapeutic journey of empowerment and knowledge. Starting February 17, Brionna will teach evidence-based skills for managing chronic pain and provide education on how to navigate life’s challenges with an invisible illness.  By providing a safe space and intimate community, this group will lessen feelings of isolation while learning and practicing techniques for living a more fulfilling life with chronic pain. This group is a free, six-week, 1.5-hour series that focuses on a different topic every week such as self-care or mindfulness every Wednesday from 11:30 am – 1 pm. Limited spots are available, and registration is required.
